We tested the Canwelum Head Torch which uses the T6 CREE LED purchased from Amazon UK….here’s what we discovered

You search “Rechargeable Head Torch” on Amazon UK and you get the Canwelum Rechargeable LED Head Torch listed on the Number 1 spot….it’s only £18.99 COMPARED TO OUR HEAD TORCH WHICH Retails at £34.99

What we discovered about the Canwelum Head Torch

9

The description said it was up to 1000 lumens...it was nowhere near

9

The Aluminium Case reached 51 Degrees Centigrade - IT GOT HOT!!

9

It came with 2 x 4000mAh Ultrafire Batteries - they were FAKE 4000mAh Batteries

9

Battery Working time was 2hrs on Full Power (compared to our 5hrs+)

9

The maximum spread of light was narrow compared to ours

9

The Canwelum Head Torch was 22% Heavier than ours

The Seller has stock in the UK but they are Hong Kong Based (so warranty back-up is not going to be easy)

I’m a keen runner and cyclist and I’ve always wanted to launch our own Head Torch using CREE LED Technology. It had to be Light, it had to be durable and as always we want to provide value for money.

I am passionate about what we do and we also try to learn as much as we can about other products on the market. I want to know what the competition are selling and if it’s cheaper I want to know how they do it.

Canwelum Head Torch Review - IT GOT HOT HOT HOT!

Canwelum T6 Head Torch

Chilli Tech Head Torch

There’s always someone saying you can buy one cheaper on Amazon & eBay:

Every now and again we get Facebook posts with comments like “You can get cheaper on eBay / Amazon with 3x the Power and double the battery size!”

Cheap Head Torches too good to be true?

We all want a deal & I DO TOO….but sometimes, something is too good to be true. If we can reduce pricing without losing quality, I want to know about it…..I’m curious, passionate about what we do and we want to provide products that we are proud of so we’re always so I dig a little deeper and looking to improve in anything we can. We’re learning something new every day.

So what did we do? We bought one to take a look at it

9

We tested how bright it was….up to 1000 Lumens apparently! (from the Amazon listing)

We looked at the T6 CREE LED – apparently it can illuminate up to 1000 lumens. So I stayed up past 10pm and was excited to see what 1000 lumens look like….and I was disappointed 🙁

It didn’t look much better than our 300 lumens Head Torch & ours had a much larger spread of light (much much wider!) which is perfect for Running at night.

It quickly became apparent that the Canwelum Head Torch was NOT 1000 Lumens as stated & certainly didn’t illuminate to 1600ft either (as per their Amazon listing!)

U

Basically explained that Maximum Output depends on Amps (power to the CREE LED).

U

2 x 4000mah 18650 Batteries should produce 2 amps so it should be producing 700 Lumens MAX (not 1000)…

But here’s the thing, the circuit board controls how much power is fed to the CREE LED so 700 Lumens is the maximum they could provide (and they are providing nowhere near 700 Lumens either!)

U

Next Test…Batteries.

Canwelum Head Torch uses 2 x Ultrafire 18650 4000 mAh Batteries = 8000mAh in Total

This compares to our 1 x Battery 2000 mAh 18650 Battery we use for our Head Torch!!

So first thing we did was do a YouTube search and found this video:

mmmmm….

So we bought a Battery Charger Tester to dig even deeper and test the Head Torch we got from Amazon UK

Next test…Battery Working Time

So the next test we decided to do was test the Battery working time. We charged all the Head Torches up, switched them on and left them running on full power.

OUCH!!!

U

The Canwelum Head Torch got VERY HOT (and our Head Torch was cool as a cucumber)

U

The Canwelum battery only lasted 2hrs compared to our Head Torch which lasted up to 8 hours

The Canwelum Head Torch alluminium case reached a temperature of just over 51 degrees centigrade!!

But how did that happen?

We are only using 1 x 2000 mAh Battery

vs

2 x 4000mAh = 8000 mAh of power of the Canwelum Head Torch

9

Basically, the Canwelum Head Torch is not optimizing its power to CREE LED through the CPU circuit board effectively apparently and it cannot cope.

9

So our little 2000mAh Rechargeable Battery can run for up 5hours+ effectively and no heat issues compared to the Canwelum 2 x 4000mAh Batteries which started losing power after 2hrs…
